Cinderella might have been in a pumpkin carriage 🎃, but did she eat a pumpkin pie 🍰. Happy Thanksgiving! Did you know that while pumpkin is native to North America, the word Pumpkin originated from Greece sounding pepon, meaning the large watermelon. Later this word came to European languages as French and English when trade between North America and Europe included pumpkin.

The recipe said to boil it with good milk, mix it with butter, sugar and even a little salt. Almonds were also included in it. Pumpkin began to appear more on tables in earlier 18 century. Meanwhile, the first recipe of pumpkin pie closer to today’s version was made in 1796 “American Cooker” 📖 cookbook by Amelia Simmons. Moving to today, pumpkin pie is the favorite pie type in USA with pecan pie being the second choice according to some surveys.
Many coffee shops add pumpkin spices to the drinks. From pumpkin you can make pie, cake, bread, juice, soup, desserts and many others. There is even a pumpkin festivals to see who can carry the most massive pumpkin which is held in California. Pumpkin even got its space in the one of the most popular children’s story Cinderella by Charles Pero. Cinderella is a story where a godmother turned a pumpkin into a carriage that reverted to pumpkin at midnight.

It is estimated that around 50 million pumpkin pies are eaten during the Thanksgiving.
In end of October, the average retail price of pumpkin was $4.11.
In 2019, farmers harvested more than 800 million pounds of pumpkins. On average, in US people consume about 6 pounds of pumpkin per person a year. Illinois producers get one of the lowest prices per pumpkin of about $4 per pound, while the state has one of the biggest productions in USA.
