WHO INVENTED THE JEANS?

For jeans we know today, May 20, 1873 is considered the birthday of Jeans. The patent related to denim jeans was registered. Prior to that, in 1853 Levi Strauss moved to San Francisco during the California “gold rush” and opened a wholesale dry goods business, which sold clothes, blankets and other. Once there, he was selling products to miners who were hoping to strike gold. Gold miners needed strong pants with pockets that could withstand hard work. The pants always seemed to rip at the seam around pockets and other places.

Nearly 150 years ago, on May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss in partnership with Jacob Davis from Reno, Nevada received U.S. patent for what later became known as jeans. The “Improvement in Fastening Pocket-Openings" patent was for adding metal rivets to work pants creating stronger pants.

Interestingly, back at that time, jeans were called as “waist overalls” or “overalls” and were worn only by blue collar workers.

The patented rivets were later incorporated into the company’s jean designs. The original jeans design had four pockets with copper rivets – three pockets on the front, including a small pocket above the larger right pocket, and one on the back on the right side. The original jeans also included button fly of today.
